Getting Started (Methane)

Starting a new advanced leak detection program with Satelytics is quick and easy.

Précis
  • Problem: Starting methane measurement.
  • Solution: Provide us with a shapefile.
  • Benefit: Quick cost quote, quick startup.

Satellite-based geospatial analytics is seeing tremendous growth in the gas utility sector. As the march towards net zero goals continues to dominate boardroom discussions, the primary challenge that local distribution companies (LDCs) face is environmental emissions. Secondarily, early indication of encroachments and change detection for damage prevention and prevention of product loss interests LDCs. Satelytics can also help to alleviate today’s ubiquitous personnel pinch, as precious employees are no longer needed for routine monitoring – they can instead be directed only to areas requiring immediate attention.

Satelytics makes it easy to get started with an advanced infrastructure monitoring program. All we need to provide pricing is a GIS shapefile of the asset area to be monitored. Within a few business days, Satelytics will respond with a cost proposal that includes options to consider (analysis frequency, contract length, and area observed). The cost includes the procurement of satellite data, our Constant Vigilance™ monitoring platform with unlimited users, and data stored in perpetuity in the cloud. You tell us when and where to monitor, and we handle the rest.

The shapefile provided also allows us to tag methane plumes accurately to their source. Our methane algorithm analyzes 3.7-meter short wave infrared spatial imagery, the highest spatial resolution currently available, to produce quantification down to 54 SCFH. The same customer-provided information also allows us to differentiate an LDC’s natural gas from other sources. For change detection and encroachments, the spatial resolution is even better with accuracy down to the square foot.

Once a contract is signed, a training session is conducted and users are set up with access to satelytics.io, our web platform where project results are curated. Alerts can also be passed through application programming interfaces (APIs) to the customer’s existing workflow management software. The turnaround time from contract being signed to receiving first alerts can be as little as ten business days.
