North Dakota Companies Making Infrastructure Commitments to Reduce Flaring

Toledo, OH – February 28, 2020, Satelytics’ partner ONEOK is the latest company to announce they are making significant investments in infrastructure to reduce flaring waste in North Dakota. ONEOK is already planning an expansion of a natural gas liquids (NGL) pipeline that started operating at the end of 2019. Stranded NGLs and natural gas has been a thorn in the side of Bakken operators and ND regulators as infrastructure has struggled to keep pace with drilling development. NGLs include ethane, propane, butane, etc. and are a by-product of oil production. These materials have value, but much less than crude and in a geographically isolated area like the Bakken they are discounted further.

North Dakota regulators have increased required capture percentages in step changes to the current requirement of 88% which will be increased again to 91% towards the end of 2020. The reality is that these capture rates are not being met and improvements to pipelines and gas processing will be needed to accommodate all the NGLs and gas being produced.

With the expansion of this new pipeline and more processing at its Demicks Lake and Bear Creek plants ONEOK has committed to hundreds of millions of dollars of improvements to reduce flaring waste.

ONEOK has been a valued partner with Satelytics through the iPIPE consortium, www.ipipepartnership.com. Satelytics has been providing weekly leak detection monitoring in the Bakken and a section of the Permian for the past 2 years. The real-world monitoring experience that is being gained through ONEOK and iPIPE has proven invaluable to the development of Satelytics’ algorithms for hydrocarbon and salinity as well as our new user platform for the non-connected world.
